Useful safety basics

Nützliche Tipps für mehr IT-Sicherheit im Unternehmen.

Whether it's a craft business, catering or manufacturing industry, there are a number of cross-industry security rules that all companies must adhere to. The following list provides an overview, while TÜV Thüringen offers a more detailed list with its MITsec - Mittelständische IT Security checklist.

  • Every company needs a contact person who is responsible for information security and data protection
  • All existing IT equipment (i.e. software and hardware) should be recorded and inventoried.
  • Computers or devices with Internet access must be protected by an appropriate firewall and so-called heuristic virus scanners. The latter monitor all running programs and report suspicious behaviour, making it easier to detect malware such as Trojans masquerading as useful programs.
  • Network end devices such as routers and switches (coupling elements that connect network segments with each other) also require special protection, as they are a popular gateway for manipulation.
  • Regular backups, i.e. backup copies, must be ensured so that data can be restored in the event of a system failure.
  • All employees must be sensitised to the topic of IT security, starting with the secure use of private data carriers such as USB sticks and extending to guidelines for the installation of software and the creation of secure passwords.
